They know that they can't play indefinite catch up, but they also know that the widening difference during a consoles cycle leads to a drop off , so this is about retaining players,rather than direct competion, what he didn't say or ignored is, another factor in this is todays gamers changing perception after a long last gen of what a reasonable console cycles length should be.
