Collectibles should ALWAYS be found through an in game mechanic or displayed on map.

I like the collectible mechanics in the Ratchet & Clank games.

You can try to find the collectibles on your own, but later in the game you can buy detectors which show the ones you missed on the map.

So people can decide for themselves if they want to use these detectors or not.
