PS Pro did a smart move in ditching the drive. I mean, who really buys physical discs these days? Answer is the number declines every day. So Sony are going to ship a console with a drive which costs about £30-50 less which they will pass on. MSFT are going to have to either swallow the extra cost or push up prices.

People who like to own and sell the things they pay for.  So alot of people.

Just look at all the collection posts and pickup videos all over the web.

XBO had a miserable launch because of their original anti ownership and anti physical media stance.  Until digital only proponents are willing to acknowledge consumer rights and ownership or make it so cheap nobody cares anymore (see iTunes, Steam, Netflix) instead of licking their lips at ways they can use digital only to monetize and nickel and dime, vendor lock, and or abuse and take advantage of consumers, it's going to continue to face XBox One launch reveal levels of resistance and rejection.

Meanwhike MS is probably still busy trying to figure out how to monetize Kinect to charge per head for pay per view content.

All other digital content delivery systems have reconciled user rights and or made the service so cheap it doesn't matter.  As long as you have greedy video game behemoths like Microsoft, EA, and Activision not willing to let go while driving the push to digital, video games will never have the same success as a digital only platform. To them it's not an alternative content delivery but a way to make more money off the same amount of product (ways to monetize and rip you off more).

These greedy AAA fucks are going to need to let go if video games are to be see the same digital revolution as every other industry, but they won't because they only want to go digital so they can monopolize the distribution channel to keep stuff at 59.99 or more and not have competition from Walmart/Bestbuy/Amazon/Gamestop/etc .  This simply doesn't happen on Steam or anywhere else with a successful digital infrastructure.

Digital only looks like the future because the casual mainstream masses of trendy loving sheep eat it up without question like they do everything else.  Those of us OG gamers who still have piles of games back to NES carts aren't so willing to eat out of someone else's hand as long as it's still attached to an arm that can take it away and manipulate us with it.

Also PS Pro has a drive.  Just isn't 4k BD compatible.

Mechanical media is dead.  Why is 4k BD even a thing?  No excuse for non solid state media. 4K and games media should be 128GB+ mask ROMs the size of 3DS/Vita carts and not 1970s spindle crap anyway.  Our CPUs can do 100s of GB/s and we still cripple them with shitty mechanical IO bottlenecks that drop to 10s of KB/s when you start to seek randomly.
