They actually remained impressive, despite being beaten by both Heavy Rain and God of War III. |
They did in a way, as their art directions were different, but Killzone 3 and Uncharted 3 did blow them out of the water while having same art style. Killzone 3 also had really lush use of colours unlike its predecessor.

Uncharted blows Killzone out of the water for me. Even back in 2009 I always thought KZ2 looked fugly as hell with its monotonous grey environments and tacky filters. Also, I can see what games look like without playing them; I've seen UC4 and The Order running on a TV screen, and I can see videos of Doom online. And yes, all three do look very nice. Honestly though, I still think the best video game graphics I've seen to date is Star Wars Battlefront on PC. |
I can understand Killzone 2 not being visually appealing to everyone, but its visuals were not grey at all and the filter was not very noticeable. The bloom though looked amazing and as I said to CGI Killzone 2 had a lot more going in its environments, more NPC's and more open levels while having graphics that matched Uncharted 2.
Videos of Doom would not look as good as the actual game, you need to see it yourself at Ultra settings in 4K on a PC. It looks amazing. I played it on PS4 and my friend played it on PC at 4K and the difference is huge. I'll probably get it again on PC when I upgrade it xD
