I'm not that big a fan of the Final Fantasy series, so I don't know which form is really better. But I suppose, sales-wise, making it action oriented is better for a Western public. How many JRPGs have trouble selling in the West due to their battle system?

I'd argue the general western audience would prefer turn based as well. because the majority of US FF fans loved turn based FF games.  If pokemon still sells as much as it does to this day, what's to say that those turn based FF fans aren't still there?

The mistake that many make (including SE) is that they think all JRPGs don't sell well in the US.  That's only true  because SE isn't making the games that people really wanted in the US though. The Final Fantasy name brand is the one pretty much all turn based console JRPG fans in the west look to, and nothing else.  SE should have realized this by now looking at the sales of their games vs all the other console JPRGs...they don't even come close to FF's sales.

Tales might be doing ok now in comparison, but still it's not really a competition at all looking at FF main titles of the past.  FFXIII is kind of turn based, and that was enough to get some heavy attention plus the FF name brand.
