I can vividly remember getting new consoles each gen and thinking "wow! they will never be able to top this!" and then the next gen it happens again. The Gen7 to Gen8 leap definitely feels the smallest though it is clearly visible as well. I agree that we are nowhere near where we can go with gaming graphics.
All that said, I am not sure that I NEED anything better than what we have today. Part of why I enjoy gaming so much is the escape from reality. When games start looking too real that might actually dampen my excitement for them.
