We also have 1080p phones for less and if the rumors are true, the hardware will be pretty old by phone standards so...

The resolution race for smartphones is more a pissing contest for smartphone manufacturers than it is helpful to the consumer. 720p had pixels nearly at the point of being indistinguishable on screens this small, and 1080p is almost overkill. But now they're aiming for 1440p? And 4k? In phones??  Phones have amazing GPUs in them now, but because of this resolution war, we're never going to know it because they're negating any performance gain by taxing the device with pointless resolution boosts. I applaud Nintendo for making the smart choice for performance over dick measuring (if any of this is accurate).

Yea I do think anything over 1080p is a bit overkill. Like on my Galaxy S7, I can set the resolution of a game to 1080p instead of 1440p and I really can't tell the difference. The screen really is too small. So I agree that with Nintendo, its a good thing they aren't focusing on the resolution much. I can understand it for phones tho tbh since phone VR is becoming a thing and resolution between 1080p and 1440p on a VR headset is very noticable.
