This thread was an interesting experiment to see how many ignorant judgements I could get, that's for sure.
Contrary to popular belief, disliking one game doesn't mean I automatically dislike all games like it. I don't dislike hard games, I don't dislike slow games, I don't dislike methodical games, I don't dislike skill based games, I don't dislike games that require I dig deep to find the story, and I definitely don't dislike games that require skill, precision, and timing.
Again, one of my all time favorite games is Bloodborne, with another game I love being Dark Souls III. Two superior versions of all the same game design philosophies present in Dark Souls. And don't give me this "Oh, it's older and you just don't like old games' bullshit. If you knew my top 10 game list, it's comprised almost entirely of SNES and NES games. No, i just don't think this is a good example of its own style.
To me, Dark Souls (the original) is like the PS1 and N64 Era when we were just truly delving into 3D. good enough to make it work but not refined enough to do it well. The only games I like from that era are Final Fantasy games (VII, VIII, IX, and Tactics).
Anyway, so I wasted my whole day today beating Ornstein and Smough, then Sif, then Vanguard Demon, then Pinwheel, and now that I'm officially at precisely 50% done all the bosses, with the #1 boss in the game below my belt, I can still say I don't like this game.
Ornstein and Smough were a decent fight, challenging but fair, but it's really the only boss in the game thus far that I came even close to feeling good about. I died a lot, sure (That's the whole point), and I always knew precisely what I did wrong as I did it, but upon beating them, I was like "Oh...well okay, I guess." Because once I found my footing and figured out what worked, they were actually pretty easy. (Turns out trying to fight them with a shortsword is super, super simple). Once I switched to Zweihander, learning that ALL my attacks had to be picked and chosen, I took the weapon that did the most damage. Three attempts later, and they were a joke.
I dunno, I haven't enjoyed any of the areas except Anor Londo, I haven;t enjoyed any of the boss battles except Ornstein and Smough, and I'm 50% through the game. 50% through and I am still waiting for the game to get good.
It's still funny every time I see someone assuming I just 'don't get it' or I suck, because neither of those statements are true. I just don't see why people love this game. it's alright, I guess, but I haven't enjoyed it thus far.
That said, if they ever release another Dark Souls game, I'll be there release day, but for now I'm just powering through to finish it so I can say I beat it, then I'll return to III.
