I really doubt they would only go 2.4 unless they cheap out on the card, which they didn't do for the Wii U. That does sound like Nintendo though...
For people who live in fully attached homes like I do, 2.4GHz is massively prone to interference. I went through three routers and still no luck with it. I hope Nintendo doesn't drop the ball again, because I would very much like to keep on playing online.
