I've had friends tell me they find Pikmin unapproachable due to the time constraints the games place upon the player...
I also have a young nephew who wants to play every Nintendo game thanks to Super Smash Bros. but finds Pikmin too overwhelming; I doubt he's the only kid out there that likes playing as Captain Olimar in Smash but is unable to enjoy the series from which he comes due to video game inexperience...
I don't think the target audience is the established Pikmin fan base...
