Even compared to the competetion it was overpriced. An XBox 360 was $50 more for vastly, vastly better hardware. 

And vastly bigger problems with that same hardware, for instance red rings of death, Xbox360 was getting masivle broken in first two year on market. So no, it wasn't overpriced to competition, actually affordable price and lower price than competitors is one of reason why 10 of millions casuals buyed Wii.
