Speaking as a Star Trek fan since my early teens, I completely agree with this statement. But, having said that, I really enjoyed Into Darkness as a movie. But I've compartmentalized the new reboot films as fluff films, not the dense subject matter we used to get in, say, DS9.
Beyond was really great, and I was really expecting to lump it with the last two movies as being "good, but not Star Trek." But this movie had a lot of great Star Trek elements, so I was pleasantly surprised.
