Because it has a higher average score, doesn't mean it meant enough to any of the critics. that gave the high scores, to put it on their favorite movies list. On the other hand the more devisive A.I. might have scored some very low scores from some critics, while others enjoyed it so much that it ended up on their personal favorites lists. Personally I actually think A.I. is Spielberg's best film. It examins what it means to be human, and does it in a poetic, non-spoon feeding way. I love it! Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan however do nothing for me, I think they simplify complex topics, just to make them more accesible to the wide audience, so Spielberg could get his Oscars. I respect that people might consider them masterpieces, and I can see some of their technical brilliance, but as a whole the movies feel artificial to me. Spielberg's best in my opinion are: A.I., Raiders, Jaws, War Horse, Close Encounters, Minority Report, Munich, E.T. and Jurassic Park in that order
I think I have to agree with Chris Hu, Do the Right Thing is probably still Spike Lee's most acclaimed movie, with 25th Hour and Malcolm X as 2nd/3rd. This top 1000 list was made by combining a ton of best of lists from critics, as you see, Do the Right Thing is the only movie on the list, as number 138. http://theyshootpictures.com/gf1000_all1000films_table.php (Malcolm X and 25th Hour can both be found in the extended 1001-2000 list, which isn't numbered). I don't know which of his movies is the best though, have only seen Do the Right Thing, which was pretty decent.

Colored me surprise then, I didn't even know this list existed, is cool but it comes to me as an extremelly classic and conservative ranking, like if modern things need to be way better than the old to be high, so it doesn't really surprise me that the old classic here (do the right thing) is higher than the new one, however I think more progressive critics would rate 25th hour higher, the place it has on BBC makes me think it would be at least way higher than what that list suggest. But anyway, my point stills hold, he shouldn't be trusting metacritic scores on this things, the docu about katrina is no where to be found despite being its highest scored work, and some films high on the ranking had low reviews at launch yet they are now considered classics where other movies with brilliant reviews were forgotten.
