Actually, that little LED light takes up almost no energy at all. Even if they removed it, you would only see a 10% increase in battery life. 

The only thing they can do is put in a bigger mAh battery in. Until that happens we will be stuck with 6 - 7 hour battery life.

With my PS4 the controller lasts about 4-6 hours. When using on my PC with bluetooth, it lasts as much as 10-12 hours with the light bar switched off completely.

There is an option to do this in the settings of both pieces of software and is relatively simple to do.

Obviously not applicable for those that play wired.
