The reason I call this significant is the size of the jump, from 8 to almost winning the whole thing.  Also, Ash has significantly changed as a character on a foundational level.  Hopefully they keep the team behind 90% of this season and permanently, no-crossed-fingers-backsies fire the BW writers.  And perhaps petition to have them exiled from the country.

And like I said, the Orange League is a precedent for him winning these unusual leagues.  That's why I could see that happening.  It's just a question of how significant they'll make it out to be.

It's basically the same jump as Sinnoh, as although Ash technically only made Top 4, he was proven to be the second strongest trainer there since he took down 2 of Tobias' Pokemon while everyone else got 6-0ed by Noobrai.

Orange Islands isn't cannon like Alola, so the only precedent it sets is for winning non-cannon leagues, and that's assuming the writers even take into account a 15 year old filler season. An extreme stretch to say the least, especially compared to all the reason we had to see Ash win in Kalos, where the writers rejected such logic.
