How are you defining success?  I certainly hope it's not units sold.   After all the talk of stake holders, I'm surprised you went there.

Why? Both platforms likely lost their respective developers money. Both had remarkably similar total hardware and software sales. Neither platform did much to grow their brand or put their hardware in the hands of new users. It was generally accepted by their existing fanbase and pretty much no one else. Nintendo's boat in the home console space is very similar to Sony's boat in the handheld console space.
