But if Nintendo finds that mobile games/going third party is a more profitable endeavour for them, they're totally not exiting the hardware space,  right? They'll totally keep churning out platform after platform even if they could be making more money doing other things, right?

It's like publicly traded companies exist to make as much profit as possible.

Because companies only stick to one division that is exceptionally profitable, right?

While you're not wrong, I'm not talking about Nintendo focusing exclusively on one division, am I?  It's  just pivoting their game development teams to make games on non-Nintendo hardware, and reducing/eliminating/refocusing their hardware development division, and using those freed resources to bolster a more successful division. They would still have various revenue streams including console video game development, mobile game development, novelty hardware development (NES Classic), merchandise/toys, liscencing etc.

People need to remember, that like Ubisoft, Sony, Microsoft, Blizzard, Activision, and EA, Nintendo isn't a charity. They have stake holders that expect a certain return on their investment. They're not going to keep investing in things with minimal or negative returns when they could be investing in other revenue streams that are making money and could be making more. Nintendo isn't going to keep making new platforms just because their dwindling fanbase wants them to. Besides - going third party isn't just sticking to one division, is it?

There's a reason why Sony isn't creating a successor to the Vita. There's a reason why Sony no longer makes PCs. There's a reason why Microsoft didn't make a successor to the Zune. But Nintendo no longer making home consoles when their last one was less successful than the Vita - that's ridiculous to some.
