PS2 was also a guranteed success despite the low userbase starting off. It'll be interesting what happens.
I wouldn't be surprised if FF14 doesn't come till next generation. (Unless it's the rumored successor to FF11.)
Final Fanatsy games need flashy graphics to prop them up... so they can't make the same move DQ made.
Also, Sony owns 8% of SE I believe. SE still made Nintendo games when they had 20% though... so it's not like they have too much influence.
