I think everyone can decide themselves for that. Shorter upgrade cycles are also not that different in investment if done right:
A buys a console for $400 and sticks with it for 6 years. After that time the console is worth shit and he buys a new one for $400. A paid $800 in total within 6 years.
B buys a console for $400 and sells it after 3 years for $200. Then he buys iteration 1 for $400 and sells it after another 3 years for $200. Then he buys iteration 2 for $400. At that point he also paid $800 in total within 6 years, but had 3 years the technical advantages of iteration 1.
