Platinum Games are well known for creating stellar action games and fun imaginative set piece battles. They went out of their way to add a Star Fox Easter egg in Bayonetta 2 and a number of their previous games also featured at least one vehichle or rail shooting type level so they are obviously fans of the genre. As to why I believe Star Fox Zero's best points come from them, previous builds before Platinum Games was announced as co developing showed more attempts to display the controls and seemed less action heavy. Aside from the difficulty of the controls, the challenges and modes presented in Zero are not some of which that you would see in the typical Nintendo game as they are closer to toned down Platinum challenges.
Not saying they did only good things with the game, it is still flawed but their contributions seemed to have made it much more playable then had it been left with the team originally working on it, who Miyamoto probably only brought on to adapt the Gamepad focus controls and had little idea on how to make the action fun. I imagine if given the property from the ground floor, we would have gotten a much better game then what was salavaged and released to us.
