That's a nice sentiment and to a degree they will succeed, but for the large majority of this expanded audience, there interest will remain skin deep with games like Wii Sports, Wii fit and the like.

I both agree and disagree ... I think the 'Expanded' market represents a pretty wide spectrum of gamers, and depending on where they sit within this spectrum will impact how they will react to the market.

On one end of the spectrum we have people (like my Sister) who have been played videogames for years but are not very interested in the gaming experience that the PS3 and XBox 360 promise; there driving motivation for playing games is "fun" and the cinematic single player and online-multiplayer 'Realistic' games of the XBox 360 and PS3 do not seem like fun for these people. The people fairly close to this end of the spectrum will (likely) buy quite a few games which are quite a bit more complicated than Wii Sports or Wii Fit.

On the complete other end of the spectrum you have people who have never really played videogames before, and didn't show any interest before the Wii (like my mother). These people are probably never going to rush out to buy Metroid Prime, but they could be motivated to buy more complicated games than Wii Sports (like Boom Blox, MySims or whatever) if they're exposed to it.

At the end of the day, the other consideration is whether these "expanded market" gamers are living with "conventional market" gamers, which I would expect to be somewhat common. Even if the "conventional market" gamers own an XBox 360 or PS3 they are probably going to buy any high quality "Core" game that is produced for the Wii that interests them because they're interested in high quality gaming experiences.
