Yes, I said that I would not comment anymore in NX threads but this is more about Nintendo as a whole... so...
I believe Nintendo is changing focus (for good-and you know I not praise them very often), whether it was Iwata's plan or not, this looks like to be the best course of action I could have imagined. In fact, this is like BtoW once again: exceeding my expectations. Of course this is talking about on paper, we still have to see if they can execute well the plan.
Nintendo is basically on the pursue of the casual/mainstream audience that gave them so many billions with the Wii/DS. But they are doing from a different angle: having other divisions/areas.
First off, numbers. If I go back at Nintendo's history and decide to do one piece of hardware, it is obvious that they are going with a handheld over a console. On top of that, if they make it hybrid, the few people that expects homeconsole experiences from Nintendo will have it in the same hardware. Even better when that device could have the best library from the company. Many of their teams will only have to do a single version and with free resources they can expand their IP portafolio. Splatoon was a recent example. And we have heard the first signals: Aonuma (Zelda) was talking about a new IP.
Nintendo has lately looking after Apple, because is a company that can control the maket to a certain degree as they have different offerings: smarthphones, tablets, laptops... Nintendo wants to do the same but with a slighty different approach: with different products: a dedicated gaming hardware, mobile games, theme parks and series/movies. The exposure their IP's could get it's bigger than not even the most powerful hardware could have done.
Do people not want to buy an NX? Good, you can play our free-to-start mobile offerings, or see our series or go to our theme parks. You have 4 differents ways to be exposed to Nintendo.
After all, bailing out from the tech race was the best decision when they can do something bigger. Of course, that's just my ignorant perception.
