We couldnt make lots of console games on handhelds.
In GBA they couldnt make 3D games, not even n64 games. but the DS can handle them.
In the DS they couldnt make games like monster hunter, smash bros, xenoblade, but 3DS can handle.
Now, a nex gen handheld can handle any game a nintendo console can handle. For the first time.
So, i dont think they are abandoning home consoles, just handhelds and consoles are the samething.
