Who the hell actually thinks about collateral damage?

It's a superhero film. It's not a complicated piece of art with plot twists lurking in every corner. They blast stuff up and beat each other to the death. That's really it.

Yes they have back stories but the original superhero comics never mentioned collateral damage.

well the hardcore fans are basing it on the fact that traditionally in the comics (and outside of them) Superman has been OCD about not hurting civlians and even doing things like rescuing cats or helping old women across the street. so for him to possibly be part of the cause (granted during a fight) of thousands of deaths frustrates people who think its not true to the character

I do agree with you for the most part though, its not as if Superman had much of a choice regarding dealing with Zod and/or being thrown into buildings by Zod

But Superman has caused colateral damage in the animations and comics when fighting big enough enemies.  He punched Darkseid *through* several skyscrapers and his fight with Doomsday didn't leave the city unscathed.  And not only has he killed villains before, he actually has some he actually wants to kill, such as Darkseid.  People's memories are just selective :P
