That is relative. Sure, usually GTA games make way more money and sel more games, but Chinatown Wars was top down, 2D game made to work mainly on the DS-PSP. Compare it with the blockbuster budgets the mainline GTAs have. It didn't need to sell that much to be a success finantially, but they still wanted much more. |
The PSP got 7 and 5 million seller GTA games early in its lifetime and DS in 2009 had a much bigger install base. It was praised by critics but still didn't sell well. The PSP version was a late port and wasn't as big in scope as previous GTA games on the system. But for the first DS game it didn't sell well.
Rockstar had made ports of GTA 1 and 2 on Game Boy and GTA Advance on Game Boy Advance so Chinatown Wars wasn't the only one to be made.
