What this represents is another option. It could, in theory, also represent an overestimation by EA. Perhaps they made 500,000 of the CE and only have preorders for 50,000 and thus want to make up what could potentially be a lose. What I see though? Is a company that is rebranding their entire game. Battlefield 1. This is the what, 5th mainline game? Why rebrand it as 1? Here is the why: attract new customers. You know what a new customer isn't prone to do? Spend $190 for a CE on a game they haven't tried yet. Here is an anecdote. I love Bioshock. It is my favorite game franchise of last gen. I have a Big Daddy from the game tattooed on my arm and the CE of Bioshock 2 to "prove it" along with a few other collectibles. You know what I don't have? The CE of Bioshock 1 or Bioshock Infinite. "Why not Mr. Degenerate?" Why thank you for asking I am gonna tell you why. Because I didn't know what Bioshock was when I bought the first one and I wasn't shelling out (that's if they even had one, didn't look) and Bioshock 2 wasn't everything I thought it was so I wasn't getting burned on another $200 purchase for Infinite. I regret not buying the CE on Infinite. I am not buying the game a second time to get it. If they had this exact option, I would've picked this thing up a couple hours after turning on Infinite. Anecdote over. Battlefield is a popular game, but they want it to be more. They want CoD level. This is a step they are taking in hoping to get it there. |
Then dont make a CE for the game at all. The fun of having a CE is that its quite exclusive. You have something cool not many other people have. Thats the point of a CE. If everyone can get one, then whats the point? Just make regular merchandise and sell that instead.
