It was actually the other way around, Monster assisted in development, but it was entirely a Retro Studios game. However, yes, that has been years ago, they were basically done with DKCR2 in late 2012. The only reason it really got pushed back, was because Nintendo realized they basically had nothing coming out for several months in early 2013.
I think it's obvious that they likely started development on something else for Wii U at that point, in 2013, and have been working on it since. But it's equally obvious by this juncture, that whatever it is they are making, shifted from Wii U development at some point to become an NX project instead. Either because they were taking too long, or what. Who knows.
All I care is that it's a good game. I would fully expect it, after all the development time it's had, to be ready for NX launch, but again, who knows.
