Why are handhelds often seen as inferior or not as important as home consoles?

Because they are. Let's not kid ourselves. In terms of hardware and game libraries, handhelds are definitely inferior. They can't play the same games as home consoles or pc. Handhelds have their place though. They are very convenient and certain genres are supported more on that platform.
