Why are handhelds often seen as inferior or not as important as home consoles?

I'd guess because core gamers like big, expensive, and technically superb games and you can't get that on handhelds. There are some types of games that are definitely better suited to gaming on the go in my opinion but these are not the games people on gaming forums like.
