I don't think it was for a specific Pokemon I think they were just planning a gathering in an attempt to get Niantic to give them preferential treatment when they finally do launch the Legendary events ingame.

Not really, it all started as a simple meeting to play together, but then the meeting got a ton of confirmations and they saw the potential to break the record and get attention, but the confirmations were not made in base of that.
