They just got really smug and arrogant because of the overwhelming success the Wii and DS brought them. There was probably some fear when Nintendogs didn't sell the 3DS like they thought it would while the rest of their confidence probably went away a couple of months before the Wii U's release when they found out that practically no one was going to support the console and that their developers were struggling with HD development.
I'm with you though in hoping that Nintendo has learned from their mistakes this gen.
