Comparing worldwide sales makes light of the big delay between the Japanese and North American release of the PS2 (seven months) vs. the near simultaneous release of the PS3 (six days) as well as the supply issues faced by the PS2 early in its life.
In other words, the circumstances make the PS3 numbers look better than they might be if looked upon region-by-region.
