I grabbed a bunch of my old PSM mags and noticed that Sony and PSM were both heavily targeting the Male teen to mid twenties market in all of the advertising and very much in the writing style of both the ads in the magazine and the editorials.  Sony had a lot going for it at the time, both with great games being released on the PS1 and even better looking games on their way for the PS2.  Everything is in stark contrast to what we've seen happen between the PS2 and PS3 handofff.  Sony was riding high and loving it.  They even had a little write up about Nintendo hardware always having "issues" which I kinda went HUH? about when I read it now, but I guess at the time Sony was really using the CD vs. cartridge format to it's advantage.  Cartoon girls with big boobs were on just about every page and majour hype surrounded every game.  It's really a day and night thing when comparing the PSM mag to Nintendo Power (which I stopped collecting during the PS1 years).  I was the target demographic that Sony was after with it's advertising at the time and it seemed to work really well on me.  I loved games like Parasite Eve and Vagrant story and Sony kept promising me more and more of what I wanted.

It seems that last year Sony lost touch with their fanbase.  It's always great to go back and look at old magazines like that as they paint a different picture of the future then what we actually got.  PSM was really hyping the PS2's graphics abilitys, for PS2 games, movie studio uses and PS1 filtering/enhancements.  Most of the stuff they talked about (firmware updates) never came about, in fact most of everything that was hyped about the PS2 wasn't true.  I wonder now if that stuff affected my perception of Sony, they overpromised (well their fanbase did at least) and in a lot of ways, going by what these old magazines stated, they underdelivered.  Sigh, it's kinda a shame that we didn't get some of those cool things the PS2 coulda supposedly done.  The PS3 seems to offer a lot of the things we never got last gen, I guess to a lot of us it just seems like the same old song they played on us last time.  This time though they delivered on a lot of the extra's.  Anyway, I highly suggest anyone with old gaming mags from around the time of the last gens arrival should take a peak and reflect back on some of the things that made last gen so great.  PSM had a lot of really cool art inside the mag, it was well worth looking at again.  I even laughed a bit...  Good times...
