BW was a dumpster fire to the point that I stopped watching it after Ash got his last badge. His battles against Elesa and Roxie were really bad. The gym battles in XY are loads better because Ash combines strategy and inventiveness to win. Not to mention, the choreography has been really good, too.
@OP. Ash won't win the Kalos League not because he will lose to Alain, but because Team Flare will interrupt their battle. The XY&Z OP appears to hint at Ash and Alain facing off again and Ash will beat Alain, "winning" the Kalos League though it won't be an official league battle. At least, that's what I think will happen.
