The rebuttal is that these games were largely still self-contained within the industry. They were huge, massive...still some of the largest ever, within the industry but they didn't reach many new gamers. Pokemon Go has achieved what is has because of the volume of people that have never played a Pokemon game ever, or even many games at all, that are wrapped up in the game. I know it's anecdotal but I'm seeing 50 year olds playing this game that never play games. Parents are downloading it to play with their kids and family. These are not really something I saw happening with Halo.
Now you could say that society is aware of Halo because of its success and I'd agree with that. But they aren't playing it. And that's the difference.
As for Kinect. That's the closest I can think of to reaching this kid of cultural phenomenon.
Also, question for all, what kind of advertising and marketing did Pokemon Go receive as compared to Halo, Kinect, GTA, etc... I personally did not see any at all for Pokemon Go. For Halo, Kinect. GTA, etc...player were well aware they were coming. The majority of Pokemon Go players didn't. That's what makes this so impressive. There was no hype leading up to it. Hell, there was more marketing and hype for Miitomo. |
The most marketing I saw for it was a post on comicbook.com that was "breaking news" when it released in Australia, with assumptions that it would release in the US shortly after.
