Release a piece of software that creates a wide spread cultural phenomenon? I'm sure they can but it's gonna take time. May be a new IP, or with and old IP but it can be done. The questions is if and when will they ever come up with that big idea and execute it well enough. Pokemon makes it a little easier for Nintendo because it was already a huge well known ip. The 90s series cartoon and original GB games were hugely popular.
