I can't really agree with that. I consider myself a devout Catholic and I have absolutely no issues playing Pokemon and the Catholic Church has absolutely no teachings or directions against it. There are a few fundamentalist Christian groups out there that oppose RPG's in general because they consider it to be occult but they are a very small minority. Most Christians can understand the difference between fantasy and reality. If you want proof, JR Tolkien was a very strong Catholic and he basically created the modern fantasy genre. |
Because they don't directly weild political power, the Catholic church has to adjust itself to the secular world. If they actually had power, they might act differently. That's not to say they actually would, but it's possible. There certainly is a precedent for that sort of thing in christian history in general, and the catholic church in particular.
