When Sony announces something as sold, it means they've managed to convince a retailer to take it of their hands. That's ultimately the only reliable number the big three can give, as everything else is from NPD etc.
VGC tracks hardware and software that end up in the hands of customers like you and me. Retailers only take as much stock as they intend to sell, but the figures are different enough that making the distinction is worth it.
