That's a good queston actually. I'd like to think that it lasted so long because the Saturn wasn't very popular outside of Japan and I never really heard of anyone interested of hacking the Saturn. Personally I was pretty satisfied with being able to by-pass the region locking by simply using a GameShark cartidge so I can play Japanese games on an American Saturn.
