You're not told what to do in Minecraft either and it's created using the same technology, albeit a lot less advanced. There isn't any building in No Man's Sky but what it lacks in that department is more than made up for in others. Both games require you to create your own adventures and both games have an ultimate goal that you can pursue or completely ignore depending on how you want to play. The critism aimed at No Man's Sky, 'but what do you do?' is oddly not something you hear very often aimed at Minecraft.
For me, if you like Minecraft (or Don't Starve) then you're more than likely going to like No Man's Sky too. I can see why the reverse wouldn't necessary produce the same conclusion simply because of how much better the graphics and tech is in this game compared to the other two I've mentioned.
