"Spike in consciousness" seems a bit reaching to me. Not anything special about cannabis besides it being used a for mild pain relief and stress relief. It messes up people's short term memory if they smoke it often enough. Alcohol is probably had a more stronger influence on human civilization especially since the vast majority of civilizations made their own to consume and trade.
