Whats the consensus on World of Final Fantasy.

You shouldn't let that put you off. For the most part they aren't really related to each other other than in name and a few game mechanics, so you wouldn't be missing anything by only playing a few of them.

But that is why it is overwhelming to me. I'm a story obsessed person and if something has the same title it SHOULD connect to all others that have that title (Zelda finally admitted to sharing one universe, which made that series finally playable and not just a few games like before to me). If I started any FF, I'd want to start at the beginning and play them all, because they have the same title. Now, if they had different titles and weren't all considered FF, then I could play one series of games or so and that would be fine.
