I would say it does. It's based on the same technological foundation as 3D World, but adds more detail and superior lighting.

Mario Kart 8 has even better lighting, but its image quality isn't as smooth as Captain Toad as it lacks AA.

Yeah I guess you're right. Captain Toad did surprise me a lot when I first saw it in person.
