I think it's honestly too late to fix it. Guns are too readily available and ingrained in American culture that there's no putting the genie back into the bottle now.
There will simply be a ton of gun violence/mass shootings/etc. on a regular basis in the United States. That's just the status quo now for the USA. Every other week/month there will be some kind of massive gun related tragedy along with the more consistent gang violence that also plagues the US.
No other developed country has that type of problem, but it's now become as American as apple pie.
