That said @OP I wish you all the luck in the world, if it's something which is coming to your mind after a nice long and healthy relationship then chances are it is probably on her mind too so you shouldn't expect her to be completely shocked and stunned by your intentions hopefully she will just be happy that you asked her to seal the deal with your love.

As a few others have said here though, I can only advise that you do take time to make her know she's special (and hopefully she does the same for you) not just on valentines and days where the calender suggests that you should but also just on days where one of you is tired and the other makes a meal or sets up a nice movie to watch for your partner, it's those little things which make a marriage great I think.

Congratulations on six wonderful years together. I was almost married at one point (even made a thread about it here), but things unfortunately (or fortunately) didn't work out between us. Now I'm scared shitless of marriage and commitment, and I indulge in a lecherous life of sexual debauchery in an fruitless attempt to avoid my pain of heartbreak and memories of how I came so close. Despite that, I love seeing success stories of marriage from other people in the hopes that one day my granite heart can crack and I can someday give someone and myself a chance at true love.

Still though in terms of what didn't happen for you all I can say is that life goes on and all you can do is try to take positive learning experiences even from the worst of what you experience during your short time on this Earth. Just don't do anything you'll regret for long while enjoying the debauchery!
