Iron-man 4 on most famous, 3 on popular? No, Wolverine and Hulk are more famous. Hulk more so because of the TV series. Wolverine is more popular (only been one X-men filmed without him, I think).
Now in terms of actor playing Iron-man, RDJ playing Iron-man brings in ticket sales at the box office. No RDJ, I question whether the character would be popular at all.
