The movies alone aren't what make the popularity.
It's the movies, tv shows, merchandise, and comics that do it collectively.
Ironman is only really high up in terms of the movies. In terms of everything else, he's nowhere near the top. Spider-man, Batman, and Superman are way higher up the totem pole than Iron man is.
And it will take at least 20 years of hard pushing Iron-man COMBINED with Spider-man falling off the map just about for Ironman to overtake Spider-man, who happens to be the highest grossing comic character ever.
