I think the advantage of having a defined generation is it's clearer to communicate with the consumer. I'm sure Sony will want to add major features and/or take and/or adapt their direction in gaming. Releasing a PS5 will get that message across much more efficient. The downside is when you start a new generation, you start from zero and have to build up once again.
