It is always difficult to "translate" prices across borders. Some include VAT some don't. Some people want to compare Purchasing Power Parity and include average salary in the calculation. Some have high taxes and free medicare, some have low taxes and have to buy heath insurance instead.

True, but considering how much money is spend and wasted on defense spending, taxes overall in the US are actually pretty low.  Plus since the US is such a large country the cost of living can vary vastly from state to state.  What can vary even more is real estate prices a equivalent of a house that is valued at one million dollars in the Los Angeles area can be easily bought for 1/10 of that money in many areas of the US.
