Not only does PS+ subs bring in profit but it enables Sony to drop the price of their console lower because every console sold is a potential PS+ subscriber that can counteract the lost profits from dropping price, something they couldn't do in the PS3 days. This is why MS can have these fire sales and still have a profitable console division, Sony could do the same and be chucking out $250 PS4s and still make good profit through PS+, they just haven't needed to.
